The Service-Learning Initiative of the APPLES Service-Learning Program is a unique program introducing first-year students to the myriad of service opportunities in the surrounding community. The program bring students together who are committed to making a difference through community service.

UNC strongly endorses improving the quality of life for members of the surrounding community and state. In an effort to fulfill the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's responsibility as the nation's first public university, a commitment to public service continues to be a top priority.

Incoming first-year students will be given the opportunity to move in early to participate in service projects that will span over 2 days. We will visit numerous community sites with each student visiting three different sites. Students will be able to indicate their site preferences. There will be a cost of $60.00 to be used for six meals, transportation, and an SLI t-shirt.

In order to participate, students must fulfill the following requirements:

*Incoming first-year student
*Move in early
*Complete and submit the APPLES Service-Learning Initiative application
*Once accepted, pay the $60.00 program fee

The goal of the Service-Learning Initiative is to provide a valuable service to community organizations as well as introduce volunteers to their new commuity. Community agencies are always looking for long-term volunteers and this initiative will peak the interest of potential four-year volunteers. The Service-Learning Initiative is a valuable part of Carolina's first-year student experience.
