Do I have to have a computer?

All first year undergraduate and transfer students entering in the fall of 2007 are part of the Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI), which requires students to own a laptop computer.  In the spring, you'll receive a mailing about this requirement, along with an order form for a CCI computer.  If you elect to purchase a laptop through the CCI program, it will be waiting for you at CTOPS.

What is the Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI)?

The Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) aims to ensure that Carolina students, faculty, and staff have easy access to high-quality and affordable technology and can use it effectively. The CCI provides a method to order laptops with 4-year warranty, an insurance policy, and other benefits including on-site maintenance and repair.

Can I just use a laptop I already own?

Yes, as long as it meets the specifications for your class. Specifications for Fall 2007 will be available in March 2007 and can be found at the CCI website at http://cci.unc.edu/.

The minimum specifications will be available on the CCI website in March. Brochures will be mailed to admitted students in mid March with information about laptops that can be purchased through the CCI program. These laptops come with a 4-year warranty and insurance package and other advantages such as on-campus service.

What if I don't know how to use a laptop?

When you pick up your laptop at CTOPS, technicians will help you set up your student email account and get your laptop configured for use in the UNC-Chapel Hill computing environment.  Additional training opportunities will be available for you when you arrive in the fall.  Carolina's online computer tutorial web site  maintains over 250 tutorials which are available for your use wherever you have access to the internet.

How can I afford a computer?

If you already qualify for financial aid and have filled out the CSS Profile Application  you are automatically eligible for grant money to cover all or part of the cost of your new laptop.  Complete the CSS Profile no later than March 1, 2007 to be eligible for a laptop grant.  Another option is to apply for a low interest loan.  For more information on financing your computer visit the CCI web site.

What about warranties and insurance for my laptop?

CCI laptops come with a full 4-year warranty as well as a safety lock.  They also are insured against theft or damage.

Can I get Internet and email access in my room?

You'll get cable TV and high speed Internet connections in your on-campus residence hall room. Granville Towers, a private residence hall off-campus also has Internet connectivity.

What kind of computer support is available on campus?

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides a help desk to support students, faculty, and staff with computing issues. There's also an on-campus repair shop for CCI laptops.

What kind of computer labs are on campus?

There are numerous computer labs on campus, some of them open 24 hours. Labs can be found in academic buildings, Davis Library, the Undergraduate Library, and residence halls. All are staffed.
